Question:

I have had this doubt for a long time and would be really grateful to you if you can help me. I usually play Finger-style guitar and I want to improvise. I guess in Finger-style, one has to improvise using Chords instead of scales. Sorry if I'm wrong, Sir. But I really don't know how to improvise using chords. Kindly give me an idea on this sir.

Answer:

That's a very good question! Most guitarist think of improvising as playing single notes in reality a good rhythm guitarist can be improvising via chord substitution/ re-harmonising the chord progression/ adding different bass notes etc

Let's take a simple example of chord substitution to give you a starting point.

In the Key of C the chords that are produced from that scale are:

C Dm Em F G Am B dim C

the notes that make up the C chord are:

C = C E G

The notes in the Em (E minor) chord are

Em = E G B

since two out of the three notes in the C chord (the notes E & G) are ALSO contained in the E m chord it is possible to substitute the Em chord in place of the C chord and visa versa.

Rave Reviews for Express Guitar:

As a student of Mike Hayes since 1999, I have found his teaching methods and products to be first class. Whatever style or area of music I have been interested in, he has provided me with useful information, advice and study materials. His style of teaching and teaching products enabled me to progress through his guitar course far quicker than I ever imagined. He also helps in teaching yourself to find and develop your own style of music. Mikeís teaching gives his studentís the ability to become useful musicians, not just guitarists.
