Question:
I am a beginner at playing a guitar. How do you prevent the pick from turning when playing?
Answer:
Picks are slippery little things aren't they! Here's a few ideas, I hope they help.
(1) I have found a really good type of pick, the more you sweat etc., the more they grip (amazing but true) they are made by D'addario available from
http://www.guitarcoaching.com/instruments.htm
they come on different thickness. The type I use is 1.09mm (.043") they are very stiff which might be too heavy for a start - you may want to try something a little thinner. The main idea with picks however is to get a pick that is not too flexible, you want all the energy to go into the string, by the way that's how you develop your speed and accuracy - with a heavier pick.
(2) There are different styles of picks - some with *cork* embedded on a section of the pick to improve grip.
(3) Some guitarists even use a *hot pin* to poke tiny holes in the picks to improve grip.
As you gain more playing experience you will discover that you do not have to hold the pick very tightly - in fact you hold the pick quite loosely this will also contribute to reducing the pick movement because to are not squeezing too tightly.

Rave Reviews for Express Guitar:
| As a student of Mike Hayes since 1999, I have found his teaching methods and products to be first class. Whatever style or area of music I have been interested in, he has provided me with useful information, advice and study materials. His style of teaching and teaching products enabled me to progress through his guitar course far quicker than I ever imagined. He also helps in teaching yourself to find and develop your own style of music. Mike’s teaching gives his student’s the ability to become useful musicians, not just guitarists. Stephen J Reid Guitarist & Musician Australia
This course teaches us how to learn, how to retain, and how to recall information quickly. This entire program is built around "connected learning" with key phrases, picture words ( yes there is such a thing ) and the most dynamic personal motivator I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

The course is varied, in-depth and well-structured, making learning and comprehension fast, thorough and enjoyable. It’s a great way of learning, as you can pace yourself and move onto the next stage when you feel competent. I find this course both innovative and inspirational. I find myself leaving Mike’s lessons with the determination to reach my new
goals.
