Beginner Guitar Lessons -The Naturally gifted Guitarist is a Big Fat Lie!
By Mike Hayes | May 25, 2009
We’ve all heard about the “naturally gifted guitarist”, you know
he’s the guy (or girl) who never practices, has a great ear for
music and can play any song on the guitar.
Have you ever met such a person? Do they really exist?
Almost daily I receive phone calls from guitarists wanting to
take up lessons. Usually they begin by warning me that they are
not musically gifted, and probably don’t have a musical bone in
their body.
They then proceed to inform me about their “fat” or “dumb”
fingers and the fact they don’t have any natural rhythm, in fact
theĀ only musical instrument they have been able to master is the CD player.
I generally let them talk first before briefly explaining that in
reality the naturally gifted guitarist is a myth. Let’s
investigate further.
Myth: You either got it or you ain’t!
Total rubbish!
It all comes down to … “those who know how to do it … get it
and those who don’t know … never make much progress.”
Cost Of Believing The Myth: Many potentially good players never
even take up lessons for fear of failing.
Reality: Truly talented guitarists are players who have the
ability to work harder than the others. It’s as simply as that!
I have known several “gifted” players who appeared to progress
rapidly when they began their guitar playing adventures – their
fingers moved fast and effortlessly all over the fingerboard and
they could pick up songs quickly.
However, with the passage of time these players turned out to be
lazy and soon the other “less talented” players zoomed past,
leaving the so-called “gifted” players in the dust. A real life
case of the tortoise and the hare!
Benefits Of Going With Reality: I can honestly say that I have
never met anyone who really passionately desired to play the
guitar who couldn’t.
I believe that we all come to this planet with the music inside
of us .. it’s just a matter of working out how to get it out.
Playing the guitar is both an intellectual and physical process,
generally speaking the seemingly “gifted” guitarist turns out to
be intellectually lazy, consequently, although their fingers move
at the speed of light they don’t communicate anything of lasting
value.
So next time you hear a story about a guy who never practices,
just simply rolls out of bed and knocks out a brilliant solo
remember, it’s just that … a story.
Common sense tells us that this story is part of the “naturally
gifted guitarist myth” constantly perpetuated by popular industry
magazines. Forget it, just keep the tortoise and the hare in
mind.
Remember, when it comes to guitar … luck is spelt W.O.R.K!
