Easy Beginner Guitar Lessons – Don’t Let A Busy LifeStyle Stop You From Playing Guitar

By Mike Hayes | October 12, 2009

How many times have you heard someone say “I wish I had learnt
how to play guitar when I was younger”. Just about everyone likes the
sound of a guitar and the fact that the instrument is so portable
makes it ideal for parties and jam sessions.

Here’s what you don’t want to happen …

1. You don’t want to regret never having learnt to play – it’s no
fun watching other people play your favorite song on a guitar,
always wishing it could be you who is the life of the party and
making new friends.

2. You don’t want to always be wondering if you have a ‘musical
ear’ and if you would be able to express yourself through a
musical instrument.

3. You don’t want to be sitting in the audience when it could be
you up on stage at a concert, jam session or worship meeting …
how will you ever know if you don’t have a try?

4. You don’t want to always be putting learning the guitar on the
back burner – saying “someday I’ll start playing”. You know what
they say about “someday”.
What to do instead …

Step 1. First “decide” to learn, stop putting it off … the
best way to learn to play the guitar is … START!

Step 2. Decide what type of music you want to play; this will
help you choose the style of guitar that’s best suited for you.

Step 3. Understand that it’s not ‘how’ much practice you do it’s
the quality of your practice.

Step 4. Break the process of learning into two sections – data
learning and motor skills.

Data learning – is theoretical information you can learn away
from the guitar … this is important because you can make up
simple question and answer cards and learn this stuff without a
guitar in your hands.

Data learning can be done anywhere … lunchtime, waiting for a
bus, even when you are jogging (audio on your iPod).

Whereas motor skills are ‘hands on’. Again, you can be creative
and practice motor skills while watching TV or computer with
the sound turned off.

In a nutshell … data learning should be kept short 3-5 minutes;
motor skill sessions require repetition and can be 20-30 minutes.

So there you have it, there’s no more excuses I’m sure you could
find three minutes somewhere in your day to learn something new
on the guitar… it’ll take about the same amount of time as
brushing your teeth.

How about hitting the ‘mute’ button on your TV and practicing
your guitar during the commercial … see how easy it is?

Time to grab your guitar and have fun!
I invite you to use these tips and tools when you play the
guitar.
