Online Guitar Lessons – The Universal Law of setting goals for managing practice time on Guitar

By Mike Hayes | July 21, 2009

Directionless guitar practice is a waste of time! Simply
practicing daily without clearly defined goals is a surefire way
to loss of motivation and eventually giving up playing altogether.

Here’s the secret that every successful guitarist applies to
their practice sessions.

The law of setting goals: Human beings need to have goals, when
we set goals it’s important to keep drilling down to the core of
why we are setting a particular goal by using the word ‘why’.

By continually asking ourselves why we are doing something our
goals become clearer and we move towards them with much more focused energy.

Let’s say you have decided to learn a song, ask yourself why you have decided to learn this particular piece. Do you need to learn the song for a band practice, a recording session or simply to increase your repertoire?

Then dig deeper … if you are learning this song for a recording
session ask yourself what the goal of the recording session is:
is it to produce a band demo or professionally produced commercially available album?

Again, dig deeper ask yourself … how do you intend to market and promote the album etc … by going through this digging process other relevant information will show up on the radar such as: other songs that you will need to learn or write to complete the album.

Even more very specific information will surface regarding the
material e.g. (a) what key the songs will need to be in, (b) the
musical arrangement, (c) what instrumentation will be required
for the piece.

On the other hand, if you where learning this song to increase
your musical repertoire by asking the ‘why’ question you would
discover the answer to many specific performance questions such as:
would the song be performed as a solo guitar piece, played finger style or with a pick, acoustic or electric guitar presentation?

As you can see by using the ‘why’ principle when setting goals
your guitar practice has a clearly defined purpose.

The secret to achieving your musical goals is …

(a) Clarity of intent

(b) Force of will

When you qualify your goals by constantly using the ‘why’ filter
you will develop ‘clarity’ then as your musical target becomes
clearer you will naturally become motivated and the time frame of
your intended goal will be reduced significantly.

Remember, zero in on your musical goals before wasting countless
hours aimlessly practicing the guitar.
