Easy Beginner Guitar Lessons – How to learn guitar notes and unlock the fingerboard

By Mike Hayes | July 31, 2009

When you look at a guitar fingerboard there seems to be an awful lot of notes to learn, the good news is there’s only a small number of different notes simply duplicated and repeated all over the neck.

The key is to understand the system of note duplication.

Note duplication:

Note duplication is where notes of the same pitch can be played at different locations on the guitar fretboard.

Each note will have it’s own unique tone depending on which string and fret location it is played on because of the different thickness of strings and differences in plain and wound strings.

Knowledge of note duplication will give you many optional ways to play riffs, solos etc., most importantly it will allow you to develop your own individual style.

Check out the following note duplication chart:

Second string “B” open can be duplicated on third string, fourth fret.

Second string, first fret “C” can be duplicated on third string, fifth fret.

Second string, second fret “C#/Db” can be duplicated on third string, sixth fret.

Second string, third fret “D” can be duplicated on third string, seventh fret.

Second string, fourth fret “D#/Eb” can be duplicated on third string, eight fret.

Second string, fifth fret “E” can be duplicated on third string, ninth fret.

Second string, sixth fret “F” can be duplicated on third string, tenth fret.

Second string, seventh fret “F#/Gb” can be duplicated on third string, eleventh fret.

Now lets’ take a look at notes on the third string and see where they can be duplicated:

Third string “G” open can be duplicated on fourth string, fifth fret.

Third string, first fret “G#/Ab” can be duplicated on string four, sixth fret.

Third string, second fret “A” can be duplicated on fourth string, seventh fret.

Third string, third fret “A#/Bb” can be duplicated on string four, eight fret.

Third string, fourth fret “B” can be duplicated on fourth string, ninth fret.

Third string, fifth fret “C” can be duplicated on string four, tenth fret.

Third string, sixth fret “C#/Db” can be duplicated on fourth string, eleventh fret.

Third string, seventh fret “D” can be duplicated on string four, twelfth fret.

Already you can see that each of our original notes could be played in three different places on the guitar e.g., “B” open second string could be duplicated on string three, fourth fret and also on string four, ninth fret.

The note “C” played on string two, first fret could be duplicated on string three, fifth fret and also on the fourth string tenth fret.

Try working out the note duplication on the other strings it will open the fretboard for you.

Good luck playing your guitar!
