Learn Guitar Online – Warning Signs for all Guitar Players
By Mike Hayes | June 21, 2009
Considering the number of people who take up playing the guitar,
only a very small percentage ever progress beyond the basic
performance level.
As regular as clockwork, each year a brand new group of guitar
hopefuls make a New Year’s resolution to learn to play their
favorite musical instrument.
Predictably, eight weeks later 75% have dropped out, 20% are
struggling and 5% are enjoying their musical journey and doing
well!
There’s also another group who vow this will be the year they
“get it all together on guitar” … but that’s another story,
mind you, they make the same vow every year without any success.
Why the incredibly low success rate?
Read on to discover some of the fatal warning signs that spell
disaster for guitarist’s of all levels.
Warnings signs:
1. Lack of Motivation – this player never gets around to practice
… something always comes up.
2. Distractions – messing around with guitar hero games, mindlessly surfing the Internet, busy texting or calling their friends etc,
3. Excuses – “not enough time”, “the cat ate my guitar”, “my
fingers hurt”, “I need a bigger amp”, “my string broke” etc
What To do:
Take a real honest look at what’s going on … in reality there’s no excuse, only reasons!
The key is to self diagnose the situation and learn to ferret out the real reason(s) why you are not making progress.
Example 1 : Lack of motivation is often caused by previously
unsuccessful or unrewarding practice sessions.
solution(s):
(a) make sure you are clear on the relevance of the material you
are practicing
(b) practice for short periods when learning new information
(c) take regular breaks
(d) write down your musical goals and review them regularly
(e) make sure your guitar is set-up properly by an experienced
repair person
Example 2: Distractions - people who are easily distracted have
problems with lack of focus often caused by unclear goals.
solution: get back to basics, why did you take up guitar in the
first place? Maybe your heart is not really “in it”.
Perhaps you took up the guitar because a friend was forming a
band and needed a extra guitarist. In this situation it was an
external motivation that prompted the guitar project.
Only internally motivated players make it long term!
Example 3: Excuses – you can always find excuse for not doing
something, the trick is to discover, analyze and understand why
you are making excuses in the first place.
Bottom line … there’s no excuse, but there is always a reason.
solution: get real and drop the wimpy excuse routine i.e., “not
enough time” … you have the same amount of time as everybody else on the planet this week, you get to decide how to use it!
See how lame this excuse is?
Time is all you have, use it well, “the dedicated take care of
their time and time takes care of the un-dedicated”.
Now you know the warning signs, it’s time to become one of the
success stories … play that guitar.
